Ragin’ Cajuns women’s soccer head coach Lance Key is stepping down from his position in the program as he is set to become the head coach at Hardin Simmons University. The announcement was made Wednesday afternoon.
Stephen Salas, whos is the current associate head coach will serve as the director of the team. The search nationally now begins for the Cajuns athletic department.
Key took over the program in 2019 when the team only won two games the previous season and turned them into a nine win squad that earned their first-ever win in the Sun Belt Conference Championships and first-ever berth in the semifinals of the tournament.
In 2020, the program finished with a 9-5-1 record and made it to the SBC semifinals for a second year in a row before they fell the eventual champion South Alabama. Louisiana set school records that season with 10 shutouts, average 1.18 goals per game and played 724 minutes without surrendering a goal.
The 2021 team made it to their third straight appearance to the tournament after the Cajuns had to open the season with one of the most difficult non-conference schedules in the program’s history.
