Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball forward Tamera Johnson was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week. The league’s offices made the announcement on Tuesday.
This is the first time in Johnson’s career that she has been awarded and it was deserved for her performances against the Nicholls Colonels last Saturday. This is the first time a Cajun women’s basketball player was named the Player of the Week since Ty’Reona Doucet in the 2018-2019 season.
The junior out of Lafayette Christian Academy led the Cajuns to a 69-63 win as she got it done on both ends of the floor. Johnson recorded a double-double, scoring 17 points while going 6-9 from the free-throw line and grabbing 17 rebounds (12 defensive). She also got a steal and blocked a shot in the six-point overtime win.
Saturday’s performance marked season highs in both statistics, a career-high in rebounds, and a fourth consecutive game scoring double digits to open the season.
Johnson grabbed seven boards in the final 7:46 of the fourth quarter with four coming from the offensive end as Louisiana eliminated a 13-point deficit and went into overtime.
On the season, Johnson leads the team in points per game this year with 15.3 and in rebounds with 9.8. In the first four games, she has the most field goals (21) and free throws (17) made, rebounds (39), and has put up at least 15 points and grabbed five rebounds in every game so far.
Louisiana will play again tonight and start the first of two exhibition games during its current two-week break from regular season action, hosting Xavier (La.) at the Cajundome at 6:00 p.m. The Cajuns will be back on Monday, November 27th for the second game as they host Loyola. Tipoff in the Cajundome is set for 5:00 p.m.
