LSU has named Alex Atkins as its new tight ends coach and run game coordinator, bringing a wealth of experience to the Tigers’ coaching staff. Atkins joins LSU after nearly five years at Florida State, where he helped lead the Seminoles to a 13-1 season in 2023, finishing ranked No. 5 in the final CFP Poll.
As Florida State’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Atkins was instrumental in the team’s success, guiding them to a top-10 national ranking in total offense. His extensive background includes stints at Charlotte, Tulane, and Georgia Southern, where he consistently produced strong offensive lines and impressive rushing attacks.
Head coach Brian Kelly expressed his excitement about Atkins’ addition, saying, “We are excited about Alex and his addition to our staff. He brings a great deal of experience as a coordinator, but more importantly his depth and background in the run game as an offensive line coach. This is really having somebody who will coach the tight ends and have a specific focus towards our run game and how it matches with what I’m looking for in our overall offensive structure.” Kelly further emphasized the importance of having someone with Atkins’ expertise, noting, “To get someone with his type of experience in building run games, the need and the timing, make it a great fit.”
Atkins’ experience in developing successful run schemes will complement LSU’s offensive line coaching under Brad Davis, helping to build a cohesive and dynamic offensive structure. With a history of turning around rushing games at various programs, Atkins is expected to make a significant impact at LSU as the team looks to strengthen its offense moving forward.
