The final game of the regular season inside Alex Box Stadium on Tuesday night certainly had some fireworks with the LSU Tigers (36-17, 18-9 SEC) blasting three home runs en route to a 9-3 victory over Northwestern State (20-31).
Greg Deichmann got things going in the bottom of the first for LSU with a two-run blast out to right field. According to LSU, it was the hardest hit home run all season with a velocity of 114.6 MPH.
The Demons got within one run after David Fry hit an RBI double to right centerfield in the top of the third. However, LSU put two more runs across in the bottom of the third to increase their lead.
Zach Watson got the Tigers way out in front in the fourth with a two-run shot to left centerfield. While the Demons got two more runs across to cut LSU’s lead in two after a home run from Austin Townsend, it wasn’t enough as Antoine Duplantis helped get two more runs across after a pair of throwing errors in the bottom of the sixth.
The final nail was put in by Kramer Robertson who hit a solo shot out to left centerfield.
Todd Peterson got his third win of the season allowing one run off of four hits, walked one, and struck out six in five innings of work.
LSU will wrap up the season with their eyes on a SEC West championship when they travel up to Starkville to take on Andy Cannizaro’s Mississippi State Bulldogs (34-19, 17-10 SEC) with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 on Thursday.
Extra Bases:
Deichmann Seems to be Alright: Late in the midweek matchup, Deichmann went down hard, favoring his knee after he was tagged out by Tim Winders. At first glance, it seemed like the Tigers could be losing one of their best hitters at the absolute worst possible time. However, the junior appeared to be just fine, walking without a limp.
Peterson for Postseason: If the Tigers stumble during postseason play, they’ll need a fourth pitcher to pick up the slack. Based off of Peterson’s performance on Tuesday, you can make a strong case for him being the guy who can help LSU get a win. The biggest question will be how long the true freshman can be put out there considering that he has thrown a total of 31.2 innings this season and only five in the win against Northwestern State.
