LSU Dominates Behind Big Second Inning In Win Over Lamar

The LSU Tigers (26-12) welcomed back former assistant coach Will Davis on Tuesday night as the Lamar Cardinals (22-16) entered Alex Box Stadium. This was a big opportunity for Davis to try and do what another former coach in Blake Dean was able to do earlier in the season.

After Cutler McDowell sent the first pitch from Caleb Gilbert out to left field, it seemed like it could’ve been Davis’ day. However, that confidence wound up being short lived as the Tigers got the lead in the second with Nick Coomes hitting a two-run blast to right field.

Josh Smith followed that up with a solo shot that quickly got out of the box. LSU got three more runs from Zach Watson and Jordan Romero in the second.

McDowell responded for the Cardinals with another solo shot in the third to begin to chip away at the lead. Chad Fleischman made it a two run deficit in the fourth with a two run shot to left field.

LSU was able to increase their lead to something more manageable after an RBI single from Antoine Duplantis in the bottom of the fifth. Greg Deichmann put the final nail in the seventh with a two-run single up the middle that scored Cole Freeman and Kramer Robertson.

Caleb Gilbert improved to 2-1 on the year allowing one run off of three hits and striking out one in two innings of work.

The Tigers will hit the road this weekend when they take on Kentucky (26-12, 10-5 SEC) with first pitch on Friday set for 5:30 pm
