Even after the Chattanooga Mocs (0-2) got a field goal on the opening drive, the end result was never in question for the LSU Tigers (2-0) as they came away with a convincing 45-10 victory over Chattanooga.
Danny Etling got the Tigers offense going midway through the first quarter with a 36-yard pass to Drake Davis. After John Batle and Devin White sacked Nick Tiano on 4th and 6, LSU ran down the field with Etling finding Stephen Sullivan for a 46-yard pass. Derrius Guice capped things off with a one-yard run, making it 14-3 after one quarter.
LSU was relatively quiet for the first half of the second quarter after Jack Gonsoulin missed a 40-yard field goal. That all changed after Greedy Williams picked off Tiano inside enemy territory. That led to another touchdown from Guice, this time from six yards out.
The special teams even had a chance to show off with DJ Chark taking one from 65 yards out to make it 28-3.
The onslaught continued in the second half with two more touchdowns on the ground, this time from Darrel Williams.
The Tigers finally got a field goal through the uprights late in the ballgame with a 45-yarder from Connor Culp to put the game out of reach.
The Tigers will head over to Starkville when they open up conference play against the Mississippi State Bulldogs (2-0) with kickoff set for 6 pm.
Extra Points:
Too Many Penalties: If there was one negative to take away from this win, it’s the fact that there were way too many penalties, especially in the first half. In the first 30 minutes of the game, the Tigers committed 10 penalties for 69 yards. Things wound up being better in the second half, but that many penalties in a half could be concerning when they get deep into their conference slate.
