The LSU Tigers were just one pitch away from completing the series sweep on Saturday afternoon. Auburn had other plans though and came away with a 5-4 win to put a damper on senior day at Alex Box Stadium.
How It Happened:
After being deadlocked headed into the bottom of the fourth, LSU broke things open with an RBI double to right field by Chris Reid. Auburn responded though in the fifth with an RBI double out to right field to even things up.
LSU fired back with a sac fly by Daniel Cabrera that scored Saul Garza to take a 2-1 lead, but that was erased with one swing from the bat of Ryan Bliss in the top of the sixth to knot things up yet again. LSU took control of the ballgame with an RBI single from Brandt Broussard and that was followed up by a sac fly in the seventh by Cade Beloso.
With two outs in the ninth, Zack Hess just needed to get the next guy out to secure the sweep. However, Matt Scheffler tied things up on an 0-2 count with a two-run bomb to left field. It remained tied at four until the 11th with Will Holland coming up huge with a one-out double to left field to take the lead. LSU’s offense couldn’t respond in the bottom frame and came up short
Big Number: 11
LSU left a lot of opportunities on the table with 11 runners left on base. Considering how solid LSU’s offense had been in the previous two games, it was pretty disappointing to see the regular season end the way it did.
Player of the Game: Matt Scheffler
Scheffler had ice water in his veins on Saturday with that two-run homer to tie things up and that’s why he’s receiving the honor.
