LSU’s offense, much like the weather in Columbia, Missouri on Sunday went cold in the rubber match and that resulted in Mizzou winning their first series against LSU in program history with an 11-5 win.
How It Happened:
Mizzou came out firing early on Sunday with a three-run bomb by Tony Ortiz in the second put LSU behind the proverbial eight-ball. Kameron Misner made it a 4-0 ballgame with a sac fly out to center field to score Paul Gomez in the third.
Mizzou really started to pour it on with a pair of two-run innings in the fourth and fifth, highlighted by an RBI double by Chris Cornelius.
LSU finally got on the board in the sixth when Brock Mathis scored on a passed ball. Giovanni DiGiacomo made it an 8-2 ballgame later in the inning with a ground out to second, scoring Josh Smith in the process. However, Gomez hit a sac fly in the seventh to make it a 9-2 lead for Mizzou.
LSU tried to get a rally going in the top of the eighth with a two-run triple from Antoine Duplantis followed up by an RBI single from Brandt Broussard, but Misner slammed the door shut with a two-run blast to right field to clinch the series.
Big Number: 14
The Tigers offense embraced the cold temps on Sunday, racking up 14 hits on the afternoon, including six of them being extra-base hits. Impressive showing for a team that isn’t necessarily known for a prolific offense.
Player of the Game: Kameron Misner
Misner was outstanding at the dish, going two-of-four and ended the day with three RBIs including a two-run blast that pretty much clinched the win for Mizzou.
