LSU Drops Rubber Match in Pitcher’s Duel

Posted by clintdomingue on March 25, 2018 in Blogs, Latest News

Blink and you might have missed the rubber match on Sunday afternoon. No, really the third game between the LSU Tigers (16-9, 3-3 SEC) and the Vanderbilt Commodores (17-7, 5-1 SEC) went one hour and 35 minutes with a pair of freshmen pitchers showing their stuff in a 1-0 win for Vandy.

How it Happened

The deciding factor of the ballgame came in the bottom of the first when Philip Clarke scored off of a passed ball by Hunter Feduccia.

Both pitchers didn’t allow a run for the other six innings with Mason Hickman throwing a complete game shutout, allowing only two hits and struck out nine on the afternoon.

Ma’Khail Hilliard dropped to 4-1 on the season allowing one run off of four hits, walked one, and struck out eight.

Big Number: 82

It’s not often you see a freshman out there on the bump, have an extended outing like Hilliard did today, but then again, a seven inning SEC game doesn’t happen often. Hilliard threw a total of 82 pitches, with 60 of them being called strikes. Pretty solid ratio.

Next Up: Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic vs Cajuns at 7 pm.

Pitchers: TBA
