LSU Holds Off Southern Miss Rally

Posted by clintdomingue on June 3, 2019 in Blogs, Latest News

It wasn’t easy by any means, but there will be baseball for one more week in Alex Box Stadium with a 6-4 win on Sunday night over Southern Miss,

How It Happened:

Josh Smith liked what he saw with the first pitch in the bottom of the first and drilled one out to left field to put LSU out in front. The Tigers shortstop kept it rolling in the bottom of the second with a two-run triple out to left center, making it a 3-0 ballgame.

Southern Miss got on the board in the top of the fourth when Gabe Montenegro led off the inning with a home run to cut away at the lead. The Golden Eagles then took a 4-3 lead in the fifth with a three-run inning thanks to a two-run single by Danny Lynch followed by an RBI single by Matthew Guidry.

The Tigers reclaimed the lead when Zach Watson connected with a two-run single to centerfield. Saul Garza followed that up with an RBI double to right center field to get Watson across home plate to give LSU a much-needed insurance run.

Big Number: 7

The pitching staff for LSU was looking good on Sunday night, striking out seven Golden Eagles and a lot of that was thanks to Trent Vietmeier and Devin Fontenot racking up a total of four strikeouts

Player of the Game: Josh Smith

Smith only had two hits, but they really set the tone for LSU’s night with the leadoff solo shot and a two-run single in the second.

Next Up: vs Florida State; Dates and Time TBD
