If there’s one thing that’s for sure with LSU baseball in 2016, it’s that nothing is for sure. The Tigers, down by four runs heading into the seventh inning, managed to comeback to take down Tennessee.
The Volunteers got on the board in the top of the fourth with Jordan Rodgers hitting a single through the right side that allowed Chris Hall to reach home. Max Bartlett helped make it 2-0 in the fifth inning with a single through the right side that allowed Tyler Schultz to come across.
But the Vols weren’t done as they got two more on the board in the top of the sixth with Hall scoring after Vincent Jackson was caught stealing and Nick Senzel getting across off of a wild pitch.
But the Tigers weren’t about to make an early exit in the SEC Tournament. They began to rally in the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center field from Greg Deichmann that allowed Bryce Jordan to finally get LSU on the board. Cole Freeman hit a single to right field that allowed Deichmann to score later that inning. Kramer Robertson helped cut the lead down to one run with an RBI single of his own.
The rally continued in the bottom of the ninth with Deichmann hitting a no-doubter over the right center field wall to tie things up. Then it was Robertson, who had committed two of the three errors, hit a single down the left field line that gave the Tigers the win to advance in the SEC Tournament.
Hunter Newman got his first win of the year throwing two shutout innings of work, striking out three of the six batters he faced, not allowing a hit.
LSU will now take on Florida for the fourth time in almost a week in the second round of the SEC Tournament.
