The end result of Saturday’s 31-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana (0-2) shouldn’t be much of a surprise, but there was a quite a bit that the LSU Tigers (2-0) will need to work on before a big matchup against Auburn next Saturday.
Things started out strong for LSU with Devin White forcing a fumble on the Lions opening drive, giving them the ball deep in enemy territory. Joe Burrow was able to find Ja’Marr Chase with a short pass on first and goal to give the Tigers an early edge.
After forcing Southeastern Louisiana to punt, the Tigers were gifted solid field position yet again thanks to a 20-yard punt return by Jonathan Giles to get them near midfield. Joe Burrow then marched them down the field and capped it off with a quick jaunt into the endzone to make it a 14-0 ballgame.
LSU’s offensive line started to get a little exhausted early in the second quarter and that wound up forcing them to settle for a 50-yard field goal that Cole Tracy just got over the crossbar to extend their lead to 17-0.
The score remained that way until Burrow led the Tigers down the field in the final minute of the first half and capped things off with a 40-yard pass to Stephen Sullivan as time expired to give them a 24-0 lead at the break.
The second half was fairly uneventful until the final three minutes after JaCoby Stevens recovered a fumble deep in their own territory and took it all the way to the Southeastern Louisiana 18-yard line. Four plays later, Clyde Edwards-Helaire pounded it in from seven yards out to officially put the ballgame out of reach.
LSU will now get ready for a road trip to Jordan-Hare Stadium to open up SEC play against the Auburn Tigers on Saturday, September 15th with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 pm.
