The LSU Tigers got their first win in 2024 over a Top 10 team, taking down #9 Ole Miss 29-26 in overtime. Because of that performance, a trio of Tigers were named SEC Players of the Week.
Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier (Offensive), linebacker Whit Weeks (Defensive), and defensive lineman Bradyn Swinson (Defensive Lineman) were all named to the Players of the Week list by the SEC office.
Nussmeier completed 22-of-51 passes for 337 yards and 3 touchdowns, but none bigger than his 25-yard touchdown pass to Kyren Lacy on LSU’s first play of overtime to secure the win. With LSU down 23-16 and just 3:15 left, the junior led a 13-play, 75-yard drive, converting a critical fourth-and-5 with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Anderson to tie the game with less than a minute left. He also converted a second fourth down to Mason Taylor on the drive. Nussmeier ran for two key first downs and showcased his resilience, leading LSU to a fourth-quarter comeback for the third time in his seven career starts. This was his fifth 300-yard passing game of the season.
Weeks delivered a standout performance Saturday night, recording a career-high 18 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, a sack, and a crucial forced fumble against Ole Miss. The LSU defense held the Rebels offense averaging 44.0 points per game to just three field goals in the second half and overtime. He sacked Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart for a 6-yard loss on the final play of regulation, forcing overtime and sealing LSU’s defensive resurgence.
Swinson had a career night with 8 total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. He added two QB hurries and batted down two passes as the Tigers rallied from a 10-0 deficit. Swinson’s second sack resulted in a 9-yard loss and forced a punt with Ole Miss leading 20-16 in the fourth quarter. This was the third game this season where Swinson recorded at least two sacks. His efforts helped lead to LSU’s defense posting a season-high six sacks.
