LSU’s Defense Shines In 27-0 Shutout of BYU

Posted by clintdomingue on September 3, 2017 in Blogs, Latest News

LSU BYU

If there’s a truly perfect game at any level of football, Saturday night in the Superdome may be the prime example of such a thing as the LSU Tigers (1-0) stifled the BYU Cougars (1-1) offense on the way to a pretty easy 27-0 victory in front of over 50,000 fans.

The Tigers pounded the ball throughout the ballgame and found paydirt after a 13-play drive that took seven minutes off the clock with a four yard run from Derrius Guice to give them a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.

It didn’t take nearly as long for LSU to extend the lead after they forced the Cougars to punt on the next drive and Guice struck again with a one-yard run to make it 14-0.

Jack Gonsoulin tacked on six more points in the third quarter with a pair of short field goals to put the game relatively out of reach. LSU’s special teams got LSU in the redzone after they stuffed an attempt at a fake punt and Darrel Williams put the final nail in with a short run into the endzone.

The Tigers will look to keep the momentum rolling when they return to action on Saturday against Chattanooga (0-1) with kickoff set for 6:30 pm.

Extra Points:

Brennan’s Solid Debut: There were quite a few newcomers seeing the field in the season opener and Myles Brennan got his chance to shine in the final drive vs BYU. The St. Stanislaus product only threw one pass, a completion to fellow freshman Clyde Edwards-Helaire, but it was the little things that caught your attention. Every time he handed it off to the running back, he did it with the laces in. It shows that even as a new player in the realm of college football, he has the potential to be great.

Insert 50-yard Line Joke Here: Since the National Championship Game between LSU and Alabama, the joke had been that the Tigers couldn’t make past the 50-yard line in the Superdome. That changed on Saturday with the Tigers passing that “curse” over to the BYU Cougars as the closest they got was their own 47 twice and were forced to punt both times they came close to sniffing the endzone. On the evening, the Cougars didn’t eclipse the 100-yard mark and ended up with negative yardage in the run game.
