It’s become an annual rite of passage this time of year heading into LSU baseball season, at least of late.
Tigers head coach Paul Mainieri vows to lock Jack or Johnny Wholestaff, whichever cousin you prefer, in the closet for good this time around, bound and determined to settle on a consistent third starting pitcher in the all-important weekend rotation.
Entering the 2017 campaign Mainieri and pitching coach Alan Dunn know they can count on junior Alex Lange and senior Jared Poché, who turned down big league bucks after the San Diego Padres selected the Lutcher product in the 14th Round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
As for who’s in line battling for that third slot, Mainieri has a pretty good idea with a month to go until opening day.
