Matt Deggs Named Louisiana Baseball Head Coach

Posted by clintdomingue on July 17, 2019 in Blogs, Featured, Latest News, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns

Matt Deggs is returning to Lafayette to fill the shoes of the man that gave him his second chance.

The University of Louisiana announced on their social media platforms on Wednesday evening that they were hiring Deggs as the new head baseball coach replacing Tony Robichaux who passed away on July 3rd at the age of 57.

A news conference has been called for 11 a.m. on Thursday to introduce Deggs as the new head coach.

In his five seasons at the helm of Sam Houston State of the Southland Conference, Deggs has an overall record of 187-118. In 2016, Sam Houston earned a berth in the NCAA Regionals, and then the following year upset host Texas Tech in the NCAA Regionals to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals. Sam Houston State would fall to Florida State in that round.

Deggs began his lengthy coaching career as an assistant at Northwestern State (1996-97), before moving on to Arkansas (2003-05) and then Texas A&M (2006-10).

After being out of coaching for a few years, Deggs joined Robichaux’s staff at UL in 2012 and worked there for three years before leaving to take the head coaching at Sam Houston State.
