McNeese sophomore forward Christian Shumate has been voted onto the 2022-23 All-Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Second Team.

Schumate is the only McNeese men’s or women’s player to earn All-SLC honors

The Chicago native led the Cowboys in both scoring (13.9 ppg) and rebounding (9.3 rpg). Shumate also led the team in shooting (54.8 pct.).

In SLC games, he averaged 16.3 points and 9.2 rebounds and made 56.7 percent of his shots.

Shumate’s 13 double-doubles led the league and ranked him 16th in the NCAA. Schumate has recorded seven of those in the last nine games.

Shumate also scored in double-figures 23 times this season, including in 12 straight games. He has also scored 20 or more five times and scored a career-high 32 points in an overtime win over UIW on February 16.

SLC regular season men’s champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had three players named to the two teams including two on the first team – senior guard Terrion Murdix and senior forward Iaac Mushila.

Murdix was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year and selected to the All-Defensive Team. Murdix’s coach Steve Lutz was named Coach of the Year.

Northwestern State senior guard DeMarcus Sharp was named SLC Player of the Year as well as the Newcomer of the Year.

The McNeese women did not have any players earn All-SLC honors.
