The Diamond will look to add more gold to his resume.
The Youngsville native and one of the top lightweight fighters in the world will head to Salt Lake City for UFC 291 against Justin Gaethje for the vacant BMF title.
The pay-per-view event will occur at the Delta Center on Saturday, July 29, 2023.
The title, created by Dana White for a UFC 244 match between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal, was first won by Masvidal and held on to until his retirement. Now, the title will return in this fight with Poirier and Gaethje.
This would be the second title Poirier holds in the UFC Lightweight division after having the interim title when he defeated Max Holloway in 2019 before losing the title to Khabib Nurmagomedov later that year.
In his career, Poirier holds a record of 29-7 with just one fight ending in a no-contest. Seven of his last nine contests have ended by either knockout or submission, with Poirier winning five.
Poirier and Gaethje last battled in 2018 at UFC Fight Night as Poirier knocked Gaethje out just 33 seconds into the fourth round. Now, the two lightweight will battle again for the BMF title in Salt Lake City.
