The Southside Sharks are off to a 5-1 start to the 2023 season, and a lot of the praise can be placed on the dominant rushing attack the Sharks possess. Through six games, Southside has 2,119 yards on the ground, an average of 353.2 yards per game.
However, the offensive line has a lot to do with that. Without a strong group up front to open gaps in the defense, a flexbone offense like Southside’s can’t work. The leader of their offensive line is Joey Edmonds, a senior that has been looked at as a calm player that stays cool under pressure.
He’s the latest Prep Profile for Week 7:
QUESTION: Joey, let’s talk about the season so far. The Sharks are five and one now after that big win on Thursday night and now you go on the road to face Sulphur this week. What are your thoughts on the season so far?
ANSWER: I feel like we’ve had a pretty good season. We’ve stayed focused on what we need to do and we had trouble in the first half last week, but that third quarter (outscoring Comeaux 42-0) really showed what our team’s capable of.
Q: Southside’s offense has made a living being such a running-based attack. Since you are one of the leaders of the offensive line, how much fun has it been to be able to block for guys like Ramon Singleton Jr, Vernel Joseph, and the rest of the backs?
A: It’s been awesome because you put in that work with those guys throughout the offseason and during the week. Then it pays off when you have those great running backs running behind you.
Q: Looking ahead towards the end of the season, which starts with Sulphur this week. Then you got the big battle the week after with Acadiana. How do you guys stay focused on the task at hand knowing that a district championship is still in play for this team?
A: We just focus on one at a time. One practice at a time, one play at a time, and we have one opponent a week. That’s all we have to focus on is the opponent we’re facing each week.
Q: If you weren’t playing offensive line, what position would you want to play?
A: Tight end seems fun. When you’re a big guy and you still want to catch the ball, tight end.
Q: Who is your favorite coach on the coaching staff?
A: Either Coach D or Coach Bab (John Babineaux).
Edmonds and the 5-1 Sharks will travel west down Interstate 10 to take on the Sulphur Golden Tors at Matt Walker Memorial Stadium on Friday, October 13. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and pregame will begin at 6:45 p.m. with Steve Peloquin and Matt Miguez on the call. Tune into Acadiana’s Classic Country Mustang 107.1 for Southside Sharks football each and every week of the 2023 season.
