The St. Edmund Blue Jays were one of the youngest teams in the state a year ago. Almost everyone from the roster returned this year to help Coach James Shiver’s team.
The biggest playmaker from that team is sophomore Ke’von Johnson. Johnson had nearly 2000 yards as a freshman and has built on that in year two. Johnson already has over 1000 yards in just five games and ranks at the top of the state’s rushing leaders.
The Blue Jays got a big victory over Oakdale last week to get to 4-1 on the season. Ke’von Johnson is the subject of today’s Prep Profile Q&A.
Question: Alright Ke’von, I know you put some big numbers up as a freshman, but what was kind of your focus on getting better in the offseason?
Answer: Getting stronger and getting faster. That’s basically the main two things that I wanted to add to my game.
Q: So as a team, you guys were really young last year. A lot of guys, basically everybody coming back, what do you think you guys really got better at coming into your second year?
A: I feel we have a better connection than we had last year because we were all young and I was a freshman last year too, so it’s better because it’s my second year and we are just growing up with each other.
Q: You’ve put up some huge numbers to start the year here. I know you’re right up at the top of the rushing leaders in the whole state. What does that mean to you to to see your name up there with everybody?
A: I just hope I start getting (scholarship) offers now. You know, hopefully college coaches start seeing that and see what is going on with me.
Q: Where do you think you can kind of take it from here? Do you think there’s still another level for you to get to?
A: Oh yeah. There’s always room to improve and there is always more.
Q: You are getting closer to district play. What’s going to be the focus once you get going in district?
A: All we need to do is win. All that numbers stuff, I don’t really care about. I just want to win.
