Sometimes in high school football, you need your best player to step up and take over a game. Last Friday night in a game against Ascenscion Episcopal, Jonathan Dartez did exactly that for the Eagles of Vermilion Catholic. He had 359 rushing yards and over 400 total yards of offense in a 30-28 victory to get the team to 2-0. Dartez and the Eagles will look to keep that momentum going as they face another 2-0 team in Loreauville. Jonathan is the subject of today’s Prep Profile Q&A.

QUESTION: Alright Jonathan, you had an incredible performance a week ago with over 400 yards of total offense. Just talk about what went into that performance for you.
ANSWER: I thought that we played pretty well. I think my o-line did an amazing job in a blocking for us and even the receivers, they did an amazing job blocking for me and blocking for (our other players) too.
Q: So you had over 300 yards rushing in this game. Is that something you were kind of aware of? As in, saying to yourself “I’ve got to be putting up crazy numbers?” Or do you just kind of get lost in the shuffle of the game?
A: Honestly, I was just thinking about winning the game. At the end of the game when someone asked me, I thought I had maybe 200. Then when they told me (how I had over 300) I really couldn’t talk. I didn’t really know.
Q: You did get a big win which got you to 2-0 on the season. But now you have another test with Loreauville this week, another team that’s 2-0 to start the year. What have you been focusing on going into this week’s game?
A: It’s probably going to be the hardest team that we’ve played. We have just been focusing on getting mentally prepared, getting ready for four hard quarters and just trying to come out with a win.
Q: And lastly, who are some of the quarterbacks you like, watch and play?
A: I think my favorite quarterback was probably Baker Mayfield when he was in college. I think I resemble a lot of him.
Q: What about Baker specifically?
A: His scrambling and running ability. Similar to Jalen Hurts, too.
