The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (33-20-1, 17-10-1 Sun Belt) just need to keep winning in order to secure a spot in the postseason. What they did on Thursday night was a step in the right direction as they destroyed UL Monroe (12-41, 6-22 Sun Belt) by the score of 16-2.
Kennon Fontenot put the Cajuns out in front early with an RBI single up the middle. Monica made it 2-0 with a solo shot straight to left field in the second.
The Warhawks did make it interesting in the bottom of the second when Tyler Cox scored off of a fielder’s choice, making it 2-1. That was as close as they got after Joe Robbins put the Cajuns way out in front in the fifth with a grand slam down the left field line.
More runs came the Cajuns way in the sixth with a five run inning capped off by a two-run single down the middle from Todd Lott. Lott put the final two runs across in the ninth with an RBI triple and scoring off a wild pitch.
Gunner Leger improved to 10-2 allowing two runs off seven hits. The junior walked three and struck out four in six innings of work.
The Cajuns will look to clinch the series on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm.
Extra Bases:
Clutch Hitting: While the Cajuns weren’t in any real danger of losing this game, their hitting with two outs was fantastic going 8-for-17 on the evening. They also made the most of those with eight RBIs with two outs.
Good Day for Long Ball: For the fifth time this season, the Cajuns had more than one home run on the evening. The Cajuns haven’t had a multi-home run game since April 22nd against Little Rock.
