The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns completed the series sweep of the South Alabama Jaguars early Sunday afternoon with a 6-0 win highlighted by a big fifth inning.
How It Happened:
South Alabama put some fear into the Cajuns early with a pair of singles and after a passed ball, the Jaguars threatened with runners on second and third. However, Summer Ellyson was able to keep the scoreboard clean with a strikeout and a popout.
The Cajuns had a rough bottom half of the inning with Alissa Dalton lining into a double play. It looked like Melissa Mayeux was about to break the stalemate in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run, but the play was nullified due to Kaitlyn Alderink leaving first base early to end the inning.
The Cajuns broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fifth when Melissa Mayeux hit one to South Alabama’s shortstop, but Kaitlyn Alderink was able to beat the throw home. Later in the inning, Ciara Bryan made it a 2-0 game with a sac fly to score Kendall Talley
Dalton followed that up with a two-out, two-run double to quickly make it a 4-0 lead for Louisiana. Jade Gortarez added some insurance with a leadoff solo home run in the sixth.
The Cajuns pushed another across later in the inning with Talley scoring off of a throwing error by the Jags’ third baseman.
Big Number: 17
Ciara Bryan’s hit streak came to an end in the loss, stopping at 17 straight. However, the hero from Saturday’s win continued her on-base streak which currently stands at 23.
Player of the Game: Summer Ellyson
It wasn’t as great as her performance from Saturday afternoon, but she still had a solid afternoon in the circle with 4 2/3 shutout innings of work and five strikeouts.
