The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns looked dominant from the outset of their series opener against Georgia Southern, striking early and often on the way to a 9-2 win over the Eagles, making it five straight wins.
How It Happened
The Cajuns wasted very little time getting on the board with Ciara Bryan hitting a leadoff single which was followed up by a two-run homer to left center by Kendall Talley off the first pitch that she saw.
It was a case of deja vu for Mellisa Mayeux, who hit a two-run home run that was waved off in the contest earlier in the day, as she drilled one down the left field line in the bottom of the second to quickly make it a 4-0 lead for the vermilion and white.
Louisiana scratched another run across in the third with Jade Gortarez hitting an RBI double that snuck through the left side. Georgia Southern responded in a big way in the fourth with back-to-back home runs to begin the inning by Ashlynn Gunter and Faith Shirley to make it 5-2.
The Cajuns were able to get some insurance runs across in the bottom of the sixth when Sophie Piskos scored off of a fielder’s choice. Ciara Bryan continued her solid weekend at the plate with an RBI single to make it a 7-2 ballgame.
Talley made it a three-run sixth with a groundout to Harlee Rewis that scored Mayeux. Dalton pushed another run across later in the inning with a single that went through the left side to make it 9-2.
Big Number: 4
Georgia Southern couldn’t get out of their own way on Sunday afternoon with four total errors in the contest. The Cajuns may not have taken advantage of every single miscue, but it was still something the Eagles struggled at.
Player of the Game: Melissa Mayeux
Mayeux was red-hot at the dish, going three-for-three, highlighted by a two-run home run in the second.
