The Cajuns headed into Sunday afternoon’s contest against Houston Baptist poised to get another non-conference series sweep. It wasn’t meant to be though as the Huskies were able to pull away in extras, winning 6-4.
How It Happened
The Huskies jumped out in front in the top of the first with Brennan Bales coming up big with a three-run double down the left-field line to take an early lead. The Cajuns didn’t have a response in the first, going down in order.
Louisiana was able to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the third courtesy of Bobby Lada scoring on a groundout by Anthony Catalano. The vermilion and white got within one run in the fifth when Lada scored off of an error by Bales.
Houston Baptist responded in a big way in the seventh with a solo shot out to right field by Chase Talbot to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Things looked bleak for the Cajuns, but Connor Roccaforte put the Cajuns back in the game in the eighth with an RBI double down the right-field line to make it a 4-3 deficit.
The Cajuns started to put things together in the ninth when Tyler Robertson hit an RBI single to plate Sam Riola, but the Cajuns attempt at a rally was stymied by Robertson getting thrown out at second on a wild pitch.
The Huskies put the game out of reach in the tenth with Brandon Bena hitting an RBI double out to left-center to break the tie and Bales hit in an insurance run with a double down the left field line.
Big Number: 2
The Cajuns had a tough go of it on Sunday afternoon, unable to cash in on a lot of opportunities with runners in scoring position, going 2-of-13 against Houston Baptist and 2-of-17 with runner on.
Player of the Game: Bobby Lada
Lada was the bright spot for the Cajuns even in a losing effort, going three-for-three and a triple in the bottom of the third that helped put the Cajuns on the board.
