The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team opened their weekend series against South Alabama with a win,
Louisiana defeated South Alabama 1-0 in a defensive battle. The Ragin’ Cajuns are now 17-6 for the season and 3-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.
How It Happened:
South Alabama opened the game with a single from Caroline Nichols. The runner advanced after a strikeout from Ragin’ Cajuns’ Summer Ellyson. The top of the first inning ended after a throw out to first base on an attempted bunt. South Alabama left two runners on base.
The opening frame ended with no runs scored.
Ellyson opened the top of the second with a strikeout. The other two outs recorded by the Ragin’ Cajuns came on ground outs. The game remained scoreless after the second despite Kendall Talley’s single in the bottom of the frame.
The game was still scoreless entering the bottom of the fifth. The Ragin’ Cajuns ended South Alabama’s inning with a double play.
Ragin’ Cajuns’ Kaitlyn Alderink stole second base and advanced to third on a fielding error. Alderink then scored the first run of the game off a RBI bunt by Melissa Mayeux.
Ellyson struck out the final two batters in the top of the sixth, which brought her total on the night to five.
Ragin’ Cajuns’ Ciara Bryan singled up the middle to open the bottom of the sixth. Bryan advanced to third but she was left stranding as the inning came to an end.
Ellyson closed out the game for the Ragin’ Cajuns as they collected the final three outs for the win.

All it took was one run for the Ragin’ Cajuns. The run came courtesy of a RBI bunt from Mayeux who drove in Alderink.
Player of the Game: Summer Ellyson
In a defensive game, Ellyson anchored Louisiana. She struck out six batters and pitched the entire game for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Ellyson allowed two hits in the contest.
