There was an attempt at a rally on Thursday night, but the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns were unable to seal the deal, falling 6-5 in the series opener against the Troy Trojans.
How It Happened:
After Drew Frederic led off the first inning with a well-hit ground-rule double to left field, Caleb Bartolero got the Trojans on the board with an RBI single to the left side. Logan Cerny put Troy up 2-0, scoring off of a passed ball. Clay Stearns put two more runs across off of an error by Jonathan Brandon, making it a 4-0 lead before the first inning came to an end.
Frederic struck again in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to further increase the Trojans lead. Bartolero kept it going later in the inning with an RBI double to right-centerfield to make it a 6-0 lead.
The Cajuns finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with two runs scoring off of an error in the outfield set up by Carson Roccaforte. There was another error by the Trojans second baseman in the bottom of the sixth that scored Tyler Robertson to make it a 6-3 contest.
The Cajuns had a chance at a rally in the bottom of the eighth with a mammoth two-run home bomb from Roccaforte to make it a one-run contest. However, the rally was snuffed out as Louisiana went down in order in the ninth, ending with Brennan Breaux striking out swinging.
Big Number: 94
Spencer Arrighetti, the ace for the Cajuns got beat up early on in Thursday night’s contest and his line bore that out, throwing 94 pitches in just four innings. Seeing that high of a number after the game stood out in a losing effort.
Player of the Game: Caleb Bartolero
The Trojans cleanup hitter did his job and then some at the dish, going three-for-four, two doubles and two RBIs. It was an impressive outing of the sophomore out of Georgia
