A very successful weekend inside the friendly confines of Russo Park was capped off by another big performance from Tyler Robertson as the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns came away with a 6-3 win on Sunday afternoon, sweeping the weekend series.
How It Happened:
The Owls broke open the stalemate in the top of the third with Ben Dukes scoring off of a throwing error by shortstop Bobby Lada. The Cajuns were able to take control of the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of Tyler Robertson with a two-run shot to left field, his second homer of the season.
The Cajuns offense kept rolling on in the sixth inning with Josh Cofield hitting a pinch-hit RBI single to score Drake Osborn. Later in the inning, Tyler Robertson scratched another run across with a single to left field.
Louisiana added some more insurance runs after the seventh inning stretch after a leadoff triple by Connor Roccaforte was followed by an RBI double by Lada. Drake Osborn made it a 6-1 lead for the vermilion and white with a sac fly, scoring Brennan Breaux.
Rice was able to respond in the eighth though with a two-run blast by Guy Garibay made it a 6-3 ballgame, but it was too little too late
Big Number: 8
Rice’s starting pitcher Roel Garcia looked solid in his second start of the season, striking out eight Cajuns in just four innings of work. The rest of the pitching staff only had two strikeouts on Sunday, which speaks to how effective Garcia was.
Player of the Game: Tyler Robertson
The sophomore went on a tear over the course of the weekend and it was capped off by a great afternoon at the dish, going two-for-four with three RBIs and a go-ahead home run in the fifth. Add in three stolen bases and the Montgomery, Alabama native capped off a big weekend.
