Only a few days before his self-imposed deadline for contract negotiations, the Saints have locked down their all-star quarterback for another year.
Drew Brees has been signed to a five-year deal that will become voidable in 2017 and will receive $44.25 million in guaranteed money. The veteran quarterback inked the deal on Wednesday afternoon after rumors that negotiations were restarting on Monday.
“It’s been an incredible journey and I hope to continued that journey for quite a bit longer.” Brees said of signing this contract.
Brees also discussed that the reasoning behind how the contract was structured almost solely with the cap room in mind as his previous contract combined with the letting go of several players that would become dead money and hurt the Saints as each season passed.
