The New Orleans got out of their precarious salary cap position and started the new league year by announcing two signings.
Mickey Loomis has announced that the Saints have signed linebacker Willie Gay to a one-year deal and re-signed fullback Adam Prentice to a similar deal.
Gay was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State. During his four seasons in Kansas City, he appeared in 57 regular season games with 231 tackles, five sacks, four interceptions, and a touchdown. He also had two forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.
The Starkville native started all nine postseason games, recording 29 tackles, one split sack, and a forced fumble on the way to winning a pair of Super Bowls.
Prentice was signed undrafted by the Denver Broncos in 2021 and ended up with the Saints through the waiver wire that August. Prentice has seen limited catches and rushes, but has been a critical piece in the blocking scheme as well as special teams.
With these moves and other restructuring that could be on the way, the Saints still look to have somewhere in the neighborhood of $25-30M left in cap space to add to their 2024 roster.
