LSU right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week Monday.
The junior from Lake Forest, CA, Skenes pitched six shutout innings in the season opener against Western Michigan, allowing just three hits and striking out 12. The Air Force transfer threw 98 pitches during the six innings, with 64 going for strikes.
12 strikeouts was the most by an LSU pitcher since 2021 when Landon Marceaux struck out 12 against South Carolina.
The effort from Skenes was also the most strikeouts in a season opener since Scott Schultz struck out 12 against Lamar in the 1995 Win-Dixie Showdown inside the Louisiana Superdome.
