The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs met in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years. However, this matchup was a much different story as the Eagles scored 34 straight points and rattled the Chiefs offense on their way to a 40-22 victory in New Orleans.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Eagles started with the ball and moved down the field pretty quickly, but a questionable pass interference call forced an early punt. On the Chiefs’ first play, Patrick Mahomes found JuJu Smith-Schuster for 11 yards, but quickly the drive stalled with back-to-back incomplete passes.
After getting good field position, Jalen Hurts unloaded the arm for a gain of 20 to Dallas Goedert. A few plays later, Hurts launched a 28-yard touchdown to Jahan Dotson, but it was ruled Dotson was out at the one. The next play was the Eagles’ signature tush push for the score and a 7-0 Eagles lead.
The Chiefs then went three-and-out on the next drive, giving Philly another chance to extend the lead. A long, methodical drive from the Eagles put them in position, but the first mistake from Hurts led to an interception from Bryan Cook.
After yet another Kansas City punt, the Eagles had to settle for a field goal on the first non-turnover stop for the Chiefs’ defense.
Shortly after the field goal was the drive that changed the game, Mahomes was sacked on back-to-back plays before a third-down interception by rookie sensation Cooper DeJean was returned for a touchdown and a 17-0 Eagles lead.
The Philadelphia defense continued to dominate the Chiefs, only allowing one yard to Isaiah Pacheco and then sacking Mahomes for the third time. After an Eagles punt, Mahomes was intercepted once again by All-Pro linebacker Zach Baun, setting Philly up in outstanding position. Two plays later, Hurts found AJ Brown for another score, making it 24-0 at the halftime break.
Halfway through the 3rd, the Eagles struck again as Jalen Hurts converted on two key plays with his feet, but a 3rd down stop led to the second Jake Elliott field goal of the contest, this time from 29 yards out to make it 27-0 in favor of the NFC Champions.
Hurts wasn’t done as he found Amite native Devonta Smith for a 46-yard touchdown strike to add to the lead at 34-0. Kansas City finally got on the board on the ensuing drive as Mahomes found Xavier Worthy on a magician play, but a missed two-point play left it at 34-6 early in the fourth.
On the next Chiefs possession, Mahomes was sacked and fumbled, leading to another turnover forced by the Eagles and all but wrapping up the contest.
Jake Elliott nailed a third field goal, this time from 50 as the Eagles once again added to their lead at 40-6 as the game went inside of eight minutes.
With less than four minutes to go, the Chiefs found the endzone once again as Mahomes connected with DeAndre Hopkins for the score and the two point conversion made it 40-14.
After the two minute warning, the Chiefs added another touchdown as Mahomes found Xavier Worthy for a 50-yard score and the two point play made it 40-22 with 1:48 left.
The Eagles would kneel out the clock and win Super Bowl 59 with a 40-22 final score, ending the chances at a three-peat.
