The LSU Tigers defeated the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 5-3 in Game 2 of the College World Series Championship Series at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. With the victory, LSU claimed its eighth national championship.
The Tigers also became the first D1 baseball program to win multiple national titles in three different decades (1990s, 2000s, and 2020s).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Coastal Carolina put a runner on in the bottom of the first as Sebastian Alexander reached on an infield single. After he stole second base, things got heated.
Home-plate umpire Angel Campos warned Chanticleer’s skipper Kevin Schnall, about arguing over missed pitches. Schnall came back out and was quickly tossed by Campos. First base coach Matt Schilling was then tossed moments later.
LSU’s Anthony Eyanson got out of the inning as Walker Mitchell grounded out to third to end the inning.
Coastal Carolina took a brief lead in the bottom of the second as Dean Mihos hit a solo home run. LSU tied the game in the bottom of the frame as Daniel Dickinson hit a leadoff single. After a sac bunt by Michael Braswell III advanced Dickinson to second, he would score two batters later on a double by Ethan Frey.
LSU blew the game open in the top of the fourth as the Tigers ran Coastal Carolina starting pitcher Jacob Morrison out of the game.
Jake Brown led off with a leadoff walk. Jared Jones followed with a single to left field, and then Luis Hernandez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chris Stanfield hit a single to left field, which plated two Tigers.
Dickinson laid down a sac bunt that moved Hernandez to third and Stanfield to second. Braswell popped out, but Morrison was unable to get the third out. Derek Curiel came up and hit a single to centerfield to score two more runs.
Coastal Carolina cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh when Wells Sykes hit a two-run home run off Eyanson. LSU skipper Jay Johnson pulled Eyanson and brought in Chase Shores, who got a ground out and then a strikeout to end the threat.
Shores kept dealing in the eighth when he struck out the first two batters he faced and then got the third to ground out.
Coastal put the leadoff hitter on in the bottom of the first as Mihos singled through the right side. Shores got the next hitter to strike out and then got an inning-ending double play to seal the game.
BIG NUMBER: 8
LSU has now won eight national championships in baseball. The Tigers took home the title in 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2009, 2023, and now in 2025. That is the second most in NCAA history, trailing only Southern California’s 12. The Trojans, though, won 11 of them between 1948 and 1978, and their final one in 1998.
BIG NUMBER II: 6
With the LSU championship win, the Southeastern Conference has now won six straight and seven of the last eight national championships in baseball. The lone year the SEC didn’t win was 2018 when Oregon State beat an SEC team — Arkansas — in the CWS finals.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: ANTHONY EYANSON & ETHAN FREY
The LSU ace kept Coastal Carolina’s bats quiet for most of the day as he scattered six hits over six and one-third innings, giving up three runs (on two home runs), and struck out nine. Frey, meanwhile, had a very productive day at the plate as he went 3-for-5 and an RBI double.
