The only undefeated team left in college diamond sports took the field early on a Tuesday afternoon to battle with #3 Texas in a major matchup. LSU scored six runs in the first two innings to pace themselves always from the Longhorns in a 7-4 contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Ciara Briggs got things started offensively for the Tigers with a single to start their half of the first. After advancing on a wild pitch and Taylor Pleasants getting hit by a pitch, Raeleen Gutierrez hit an RBI double to score Briggs and put the Tigers on the board. Then, former Notre Dame High product Maci Bergeron drew a walk to load the bases before Karli Petty was hit by a pitch to score the Tiegrs’ second run of the first inning.
LSU was not done as Washington transfer Kelley Lynch cleared the bases with a double into the left center gap that gave the Tigers a 5-0 first inning lead in a Top 3 college softball matchup.
Ali Newland got an RBI single in the bottom of the second to score Briggs for the second time this morning and extend LSU’s lead over #3 Texas to 6-0.
Texas got three runs back in the top of the third with a trio of singles loading the bases before a two-run RBI single from Mia Scott made the score 6-2. Then, Reese Atwood hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score a third run and cut the LSU lead in half.
In the top of the fourth, Texas got another run thanks to a second RBI single from Scott to make it a 6-4 game, but LSU got the run back in the bottom half with a leadoff triple from Sierra Daniel setting up a RBI sac fly from Briggs to make it 7-4.
