The Texas A&M Aggies plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth at Blue Bell Park to pull out a 6-4 victory over LSU on Sunday. With the win, Texas A&M won the rubber match and the weekend SEC series.
With the defeat, LSU is now 38-11 overall and 15-9 in SEC play. Jay Johnson’s team has lost three conference series this season, with the others being against Texas and Auburn.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After the two teams were held scoreless in the first three innings, both teams got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning.
LSU struck first as Daniel Dickinson drew a one-out walk, but then was out moments later on a fielder’s choice by Michael Braswell III. With two outs, Luis Hernandez laced a double to left centerfield to bring Braswell home. Steven Milam then hit a single to left field to bring home Hernandez.
Texas A&M answered in the bottom frame.
Evans walked both Ben Royo and Gavin Kash to put two on with one out. Terrence Kiel then hit a single into right centerfield that scored a run. Jay Johnson pulled Casan Evans and put in DJ Primeaux to face Jace Laviolette, who got to strike out. He then put in Jaden Noot to face Wyatt Henseler, who he got to hit into a fielder’s choice.
Texas A&M tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run by Kaeden Kent. LSU retook the lead in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run by Hernandez.
The Aggies got a run in the bottom of the eighth.
Gavin Kash hit a one-out double to right center and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Chase Shores got Kiel to strike out for the second out, Johnson pulled Shores for Conner Ware, who gave up a single that plated a run.
Johnson then pulled Ware and put in the Tigers’ closer Zac Cowan. That didn’t pay off for the Tigers as Sorrell came in and blasted a three-run home run over the left field wall.
BIG NUMBER: 7
LSU used seven different pitchers in Sunday’s loss to Texas A&M. Five of the seven pitchers gave up at least one hit, and those same five also were tagged with all six earned runs. The only two to escape without a blemish were Primeaux and Cooper Williams, who only pitched one-third of an inning each.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: LUIS HERNANDEZ
LSU’s catcher had a very good day at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI, one double and one home run.
