If you check out the various hashtags and social media gimmicks out there today, most of them are vapid wastes of time. The concept of #ThrowbackThursday means absolutely nothing in an age where nostalgia litters the pop culture landscape. The idea of #WCW (Woman Crush Wednesday) does not offend me so much in that it’s problematic for our beloved Social Justice Warriors, but more so because it is ripping off the acronym of the single greatest professional wrestling organization man has ever known. WCW stands for WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING always and forever.
As I digress into pro wrestling rants (by the way, how badass is Survivor Series going to be?), these hashtags and social media gimmicks mean nothing and offer even less. So today let us all get behind a new social media movement that will piggy-back on the momentum of an actual real life movement that is going on right in front of our very eyes. As an ode to the law that has paved the way for what we are witnessing, we are calling this social media movement #TitleIXTuesday.
The concept for #TitleIXTuesday or #T9T, is simple. Instead of posting a picture of a hot chick with a caption, like a dork every Wednesday; you post a picture of one of the countless females in sports and entertainment who, hot or not, inspire and kick ass. It won’t be hard to find one. They are all over the place. From the soccer pitch, to the silver screen, and even in the Octagon; there are a staggering amount of females to worship for reasons other that having a nice big juicy butt.
Now that we have cut the ribbon and opened the doors to #T9T, allow me to make my inaugural Title IX Tuesday post to be about the leader of the women’s revolution in sports: the one and the only, “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey.
Honestly, every Title IX Tuesday could be about Ronda. She is that damn good. She is Muhammad Ali. She is Roddy Piper. She is the modern day athlete who, when we we think we’ve got all the answers, she changes the questions. There is not a person in sports who combines the toughness, beauty, grace, and wisdom that Rousey does. If I have a daughter, I want her to be like Ronda. If I have a son, I want him to be like Ronda.
While she certainly has been ingeniously marketed and has made all of the right career moves, the person that comes through the screen when you see this woman in an interview or in a fight is remarkable. For this week’s Title IX Tuesday, I am proud to acknowledge the reigning, defending, undisputed UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion of the World, “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey!
