In what was likely his final professional fight, Dustin Poirier was defeated by Max Holloway on Saturday night inside the Smoothie King Center at UFC 318.
The event was tabbed “The Last Dance,” as Poirier is expected to walk away from the sport. He made sure this event took place in his home state of Louisiana.
Early on, Holloway was able to knock Poirier off balance and get him to the ground. There, he landed a few more shots before Poirier was able to get back to his feet and finish the round.
In round two, it began as more of the same. Holloway was again on the offensive, knocking Poirier to the ground. After a long battle on the ground, Poirier got to his feet and struck back. This time, he landed a blow that sent Holloway down, and finished the round in a better position.
The third round saw balance throughout, with neither fighter gaining a significant advantage. The fourth round had more of the same, with both having their moments of success.
In the final round, both fighters tried to land big shots, but things went back and forth. Holloway landed a few blows towards the end of the fight, allowing one last statement.
In a unanimous decision, Holloway was named the winner of the fight and retained the BMF belt.
