USPS To Honor Ernest J. Gaines With Stamp

The United States Postal Service will issue the 46th in its series of Black Heritage postal stamps. The stamp salutes the memory of author Ernest J. Gaines. He’s best known for the novels “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and “A Lesson Before Dying.”


Gaines was the son of Louisiana sharecroppers. He was born on a plantation near New Roads in 1933. Gaines passed away in 2019. His work has been hailed for bringing a black American voice to modern literature. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1971.


A first Day Issue Event will be held on January 23rd, 2023, with Donald Lee Moak from the USPS Board of Governors presiding. The event is free & open to the public. Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP: the University of Louisiana at Lafayette 620 McKinley St. Lafayette, LA 70503.
