Louisiana Ragin Cajuns sophomore linebacker Cameron Whitfield has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his career performance on the road at South Alabama.
Whitfield recorded a career-best seven tackles while posting 3.5 sacks, which is just half a sack off the single-game record, and forced three fumbles, which is the most by a FBS player this season. One of his fumbles resulted in a 55-yard touchdown return for Kendre Gant which gave Louisiana a 26-14 lead.
Whitfield, who currently sits 10th nationally in sacks (7), has racked up 27 tackles and a team-leading eight tackles for loss so far this season. The conference honor is the first for Whitfield but the second of its kind, as the Houston, Texas native was named the LSWA Defensive Player of the Week on September 18 for his performance on the road at UAB.
Whitfield was also named the LSWA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, making it the second time the linebacker received the honor this season.
The Cajuns (5-3, 2-2 SBC) will return to the field this Saturday when they travel to Jonesboro, Arkansas to battle with Arkansas State. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. and will be available on ESPN+.
