The once rich football tradition at Northside High School has fallen on hard times in recent years, cycling through head coaches while posting more losses than wins on the field and attracting less fans to home games.
Longtime Vikings staffer and wrestling coach John Simmons is tasked with changing all of that, taking over the football program leading into the 2017 campaign.
Simmons, who joined Bumper to Bumper Sports earlier this week, described a roster that’s doubled in size since he took the reins during spring football.
On top of bringing more players into the fold, Simmons believes he’ll bring back the red and black into the stands, starting with alumni of both Northside High School and the football program.
Listen in to the full interview below, as Simmons also opens up on the 2017 schedule – one that begins with three consecutive road games before returning home for a date with nearby St. Martinville on Sept. 22.
