Just after 1 a.m., authorities responded to reports of a crash involving five to six vehicles, including at least one 18-wheeler. Louisiana State Police told KATC that the crash happened when the 18-wheeler was unable to slow down in an active construction zone and crashed into the vehicle in front of it, starting a chain reaction of collisions.
The two drivers killed, identified as 24-year-old Geri Glasco of Arnaudville and 45-year-old Kenneth McNeil of Houston, were pronounced dead at the scene. Glasco was a volunteer assistant coach and the daughter of UL Head Softball Coach Gerry Glasco.
The crash occurred on I-10 east at mile marker 106, just past Louisiana Avenue, according to Louisiana State Police.
It’s not known at this time if impairment was a factor in the crash; however, standard toxicology tests are pending. The driver of the 18-wheeler submitted to a breathalyzer test, and no traces of alcohol were found.
The investigation is ongoing. The interstate reopened in that direction at around 9 a.m. Thursday.
