LSU Survives Late Scare to Take Rubber Game

Posted by clintdomingue on April 28, 2019 in Blogs, Latest News

The 14th-ranked LSU Tigers offense stayed hot and were able to take the rubber game from Alabama by the score of 5-4 despite a late rally from the Crimson Tide.

How It Happened:

Josh Smith got the Tigers on the board in the top of the first with an RBI double down the right-field line to get Antoine Duplantis across. Alabama tied things up though in the bottom frame when Marceaux walked Drew Williamson with the bases loaded.

LSU’s bats came alive in the third with Saul Garza leading off with a no-doubter to left field to give them a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Gavin Dugas connected on a single to left field that got Smith and Zach Watson across to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

Daniel Cabrera kept it rolling in the fourth inning with a solo shot down the right-field line, but the Crimson Tide started to fight back in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Morgan McCullough. Alabama cut it two runs in the bottom of the eighth with one swing of the bat from Tyler Gentry.

Devin Fontenot entered the game in the ninth to get the Tigers out of Tuscaloosa with a series win and things got a little dicey when Fontenot walked the bases loaded. McCullough followed that up with a groundout to second to get Robinson across home plate. Keith Holcombe had a chance to put a dagger through LSU fans’ hearts, but he struck out swinging to end the ballgame.

Big Number: 10

Alabama’s offense had been the real highlight this weekend, but they couldn’t cash in on any opportunities, stranding 10 baserunners in the process.

Player of the Game: Saul Garza

Garza was the lone batter for LSU who went two-for-three on the afternoon with an RBI. While Marceaux’s performance was solid on short notice, but Garza’s solo shot in the third was a little more impressive.
