Louisiana got a great pitching effort from four players, and did just enough on offense to win 2-0 in a Wednesday night game against Southeastern at Russo Park. The win was the seventh in their last eight games and keeps things rolling as they move towards the first Sun Belt road series of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

For Louisiana, it was junior right-hander Tommy Ray who got the start on the mound. Ray was effective early, navigating through the Lion lineup. He went three strong innings, allowing no runs with just one hit and one walk.

The Cajuns offense was slow to start, however. They compiled seven hits off of Lion starter Jay Long, but Long was effective getting out of trouble. However, he had to be removed with an injury after 3 2/3 innings. He left the game with runners on first and second with two outs, and his successor Reid Reynolds immediately gave up and RBI single to Max Marusak to put Louisiana ahead 1-0.

The Cajuns continued to get hits, but just could not turn them into runs. They did add a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI hit by pitch for Carson Roccaforte. However, Louisiana left the bases loaded shortly after and it remained 2-0.

The story of the night was the pitching for Louisiana. Coach Matt Deggs decided to use several different pitchers, and all of them executed well. After Ray and Rawls each went three innings, Carson Fluno pitched a scoreless seventh and Brendan Moody closed it out with two dominant innings to record his second save. Louisiana won their fifth in a row with the 2-0 victory.

BIG NUMBER: 2

Cajuns’ pitching held Southeastern to just two hits. It was a complete effort from the pitching staff on a night where the offense struggled to score.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Peyton LeJeune

On a night when offense was hard to come by, Peyton LeJeune came through with two hits and a walk, reaching base in all but one at-bat. He is one of the Cajuns’ players vying for more playing time, and tonight may help his case going forward.

UP NEXT: The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns will be back in Sun Belt play this weekend as they take on South Alabama in Mobile in a three-game series.
