Louisiana is headed to the Super Regionals.
Gerry Glasco’s program is now one step closer to the pinnacle of college softball: The Womens College World Series in Oklahoma City. The Ragin Cajuns will appear in a Super for the first time since 2016 and will look to go to OKC for the first time since 2014.
For Glasco, this is his first appearance in a Super Regional as a head coach, having taken over the Louisiana program in 2018. He previously spent seven seasons as an associate head coach at Georgia, Texas A&M, and Auburn.
Louisiana advanced out of the Baton Rouge Regional after beating in-state rival LSU twice on Championship Sunday, erasing a 4-1 deficit in Game 6 to win 7-4 before a back-and-forth affair where the Cajuns held a 6-0 lead before winning it 9-8 in the seventh in the winner take all matchup.
Now, Glasco and the Cajuns will head up to the Pacific Northwest to battle seventh-seeded Washington, a team that had to rally back to win their regional over McNeese, scoring seven in the seventh to win that game 7-6.
Where do the Cajuns match up well with Washington? Where will the Huskies give them fits?
Washington is a very similar team to Louisiana with a strong defense and a solid pitching staff to complement it. Heather Tarr has created a championship winning program in Seattle, having won a national title in 2009.
But the story here is more about the Cajuns and the man that leads them.
Since 2018, Gerry Glasco has put Louisiana in a regional every season, reaching Championship Sunday each time as well. However, heโs always walked out of the respective stadiums empty handed. Including twice in Baton Rouge.
Now, the proverbial monkey is off Glascoโs back and his team is prepared to play for a spot in the College World Series, where anything can happen.
Could Louisiana lift a national championship trophy? Certainly possible, but it wonโt be easy.
First, though, they have a three game series in the Pacific Northwest for that spot in OKC. With players like Lauren Allred, Sophie Piskos, Jourdyn Campbell and others, they will certainly have a fair fight for that spot.
Also, a pitching staff of Sam Landry, Meghan Schorman, Kandra Lamb, Chloe Riassetto, and Karly Heath gives Louisiana a leg up as well.
The Ragin Cajuns will look to earn their spot in OKC beginning at 9:00 p.m. on Friday night against Washington.
