The Houston Astros will have two of their frontline starting pitchers sidelined due to season-ending surgeries.

Astros General Manager Dana Brown announced Wednesday that right-handed pitchers Cristian Javier and José Urquidy are each scheduled to undergo surgery on their right elbows.

Urquidy, who has been on the Injured List since the start of the season, is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday. Javier meanwhile has been on the Injured List since May 24 and is scheduled to have surgery on Thursday.

Both pitchers will be out for the remainder of the 2024 season.

Urquidy made one rehab start for Double-A Corpus Christi and then two rehab starts for Triple-A Sugar Land. In his most recent start, on May 24th for the Space Cowboys, Urquidy left the game with two outs in the fourth inning after experiencing discomfort in his right forearm area.

Javier meanwhile was 3-1 overall with a 3.89 ERA in seven starts for the Astros this season before being placed on the IL with discomfort in his right forearm area.

Urquidy has a 27-16 overall record in five-plus MLB seasons with a 3.98 ERA and 326 strikeouts. He also started for the Astros in Game 4 of the 2019 World Series, Urquidy became just the third Mexican-born World Series starting pitcher and became the second Mexican-born pitcher to win a World Series game after Fernando Valenzuela.

In four-plus MLB seasons, Javier has a 33-18 overall record with a 3.55 ERA and 563 strikeouts. The 27-year-old from the Dominican Republic was also part of two combined no-hitters in 2022, including Game 4 of the World Series.
