Former Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun and longtime NBA basketball player Elfrid Payton has received an invitation to New Orleans Pelicans training camp, according to ESPN’s Andrew Lopez
Payton is a Gretna, Louisiana native who played high school ball for John Ehret High School. He went onto sign with the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, playing for Coach Bob Marlin.
Payton put up massive numbers at UL, averaging over 19 points per game with nearly six assists in his third season. He led the Cajuns to the NCAA Tournament in the 2013-14 season and then moved onto the NBA.
He was selected with the 10th overall pick in the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers. He has played in eight NBA seasons, including one with the Pelicans in 2018-19. He has also kept his career going in the NBA’s G-League for the last two seasons since his last appearance in the Association in 2021-22.
The 30-year old guard will now get a chance to make the roster of the team from his hometown in New Orleans.
