The Astros will bring another prospect from the farm system. Infielder, Brice Matthews, from Triple-A Sugar Land, is the latest addition to the Astros roster. Matthews will join the big club in Houston this afternoon and will wear #28. Corresponding moves will be announced later today.
After being the first selection in the 2023 MLB Amateur Draft for the Astros, Mathews has become their top prospect on MLB.com. Before being called up, Matthews had been scheduled to play in tomorrow’s MLB All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta.
In his 73 games played this season in Sugar Land, Mathews has hit .283 (76×269) with 12 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs, and 39 RBI with a .400 on-base percentage and a .476 slugging percentage (.876 OPS). The former Nebraska Cornhuskers also has a club-leading 25 stolen bases, which ranks fourth in the Pacific Coast League.
Matthews had an outstanding month of June, earning Astros Minor League Player of the Month honors after hitting .306 in 25 games with six doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 16 RBI while posting a .551 slugging percentage and a .960 OPS. His 2025 highlights also include hitting for the cycle on May 10 at Sacramento (4×6, HR, 2 RBI).
On the defensive side, Matthews has started at second base 58 times, nine times he was the team’s DH, and played at shortstop on six occasions. The 23-year-old also has made one appearance in centerfield.
Matthews grew up right outside of Houston and was a member of the Astros Youth Academy, joining at the age of eight years old and remaining until graduating high school. He was also a member of the Astros Junior and Senior RBI All-Star teams. Atascocita High School was where he graduated and became a star in both baseball and football (quarterback). From there, Matthews earned All-America honors as a shortstop with the Cornhuskers before being selected by the Astros in the first round of the draft in 2023.
