The Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl LX 29-13 over the New England Patriots on Sunday evening in Santa Clara, California. The win represents the second Super Bowl for the Seahawks and is the opposite outcome of the first time these two franchises met in the Big Game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Seahawks began with the football, and executed an effective first drive. Sam Darnold led the Seattle offense. They went eight plays and 51 yards, but the Patriots defense held strong and forced a field goal. Jason Myers connected on a 33-yarder, giving Seattle an early 3-0 advantage.
Both defenses came to play, and they would force five consecutive punts in the ensuing series. Seattle then created a drive much like their first, moving eight plays and 55 yards this time. Kenneth Walker III led the way on offense, as he totaled 94 yards in the first half alone. Once again, they were held to three and took a 6-0 lead.
Down the stretch of the first half, the Seahawks defense continued to make life difficult for Drake Maye and the New England offense. Darnold and company got it back one more time, and again put together a field goal drive. The kick was good, giving them a 9-0 lead going into the break.
The third quarter was much of the same. With Jaxon Smith-Njigba battling injury, Seattle was short-handed on offense. Still, they put together another long field goal drive, extending their lead to 12-0.
The Seahawks four-man rush wreaked havoc on Maye and the Patriots all night long. They eventually forced a fumble, creating good field position to start the fourth quarter.
The Seahawks finally got the game’s first touchdown in the fourth. Darnold hit AJ Barner for the TD, making it a 19-0 lead.
New England finally got their offense going after that. Maye orchestrated a quick three play, 65 yard drive that ended with a 35-yard touchdown strike to Mack Hollins. That made it 19-7.
Seattle responded with another field goal drive. On this one, Myers broke the record for field goals made in a Super Bowl, hitting his fifth and making it 22-7.
With New England claiming to life, Seattle put them out of their misery. A Super Bowl record tying seventh sack, this one of the strip sack variety, was returned by Uchenna Nwosu for a touchdown to give the Seahawks a 29-7 lead.
The Patriots would add a touchdown on a pass to Rhamondre Stevenson. That made it 29-13 after an unsuccessful two-point conversion. They would get the ball back one more time, but could not draw any closer. The Seahawks claimed the Lombardi Trophy.
BIG NUMBER: 5
Jason Myers broke the Super Bowl record with five made field goals in this game. That accounted for 15 points, and the Seahawks won by 16. Those proved to be very important points in this game.
