The Houston Astros’ slugger Yordan Alvarez was named American League Player of the Month for September. Alvarez was instrumental in the Astros’ running down the Texas Rangers and capturing the division title on the final day of the season.
Alvarez had an OPS of 1.060 with 8 HRs and 20 RBIs in Major League Baseball’s final month of the regular season. He also reached base safely in all but one game throughout September.
This was surprisingly just the second time Yordan has received the award, with the other time coming in June of last season. It was also the first time an Astros received the award this year.
Alvarez missed much of the early portion of the season with an injury but has continued to be a force in the Astros lineup since returning. He will look to lead the Houston offense in the postseason when they get underway on Saturday inside Minute Maid Park against either the Toronto Blue Jays or the Minnesota Twins. The start time on that game is still to be determined.
