Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez is headed to the injured list, the team announced on Tuesday.
Alvarez is dealing with right hand inflammation, and the team placed him on the 10-day injured list in order to undergo more testing and give him time to heal.
Manager Joe Espada talked about the decision.
“We gotta get him right, and I think with a few more days of rest, I think it will benefit him and hopefully we get him back by the homestand. He’s flying back to Houston today to see the doctors and get some imaging and make sure that we’re on the right track,” Espada said.
Alvarez has been off to an unusually slow start this season. In 29 games, he is hitting just .210 with three homers and 18 RBIs. His OPS sits at .646, more than 200 points lower than any season in his big league career.
The Astros are 17-17 this season and are currently on the back end of a six-game road trip. They face the Milwaukee Brewers tonight, May 6th, at 6:40 PM. You can listen to the action in that game on Newstalk 98.5 FM.
